01Paper and the telephone
It is the most common system and it has real qualities. It never breaks down, it costs nothing, it needs no training, and it belongs to you entirely. A great many practices run perfectly well this way.
What a book cannot do is answer. Where is this person's file, how many times have they not come, how much is still owed this month. A book keeps; it does not count. And it does not open at ten at night.
- The file is looked for by hand, and sometimes there are two of them.
- The month's three figures are redone at the end of every month.

02Software installed at the practice
It is fast, it works without the internet, and your data sits on a machine you can point at. That is a serious argument and it is the one we hear most often.
What it cannot do is be anywhere other than the room it was installed in. Your assistant from home, your second practitioner, the person who wants to book on a Friday evening. And on the day you want to leave, the real question is not the price: it is what you take with you.
- One licence per seat, and the seat is in the room.
- The backup is your affair, until the day it is not.
- Leaving means recovering the database, and that is rarely arranged.
03A listing site, with no management behind it
It does one thing and does it well: it brings you people who did not know you. That is real and it is not nothing.
What it does not do is the rest. It hands you a booking and you copy it into your own book. You end up with two schedules, and the second is always the one that is right. The file, the money, the team and the hours stay on your hands.

04Nothing at all
A great many practices have nothing and are doing fine. The question is not whether it works today, it is what it will cost on the day there are two practitioners, or the day your assistant leaves taking with her what only she knew.
It is also the easiest situation to change, because there is nothing to carry over. An operator prepares your page, your services and your hours, and you approve them or you correct them.
